Driver Education
The Driver Education Program is jointly administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles and the State Education Department. Courses must provide each student at least 24 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of in-car instruction. Students must complete at least 6 hours of actual behind-the-wheel driving and eighteen 18 hours of observation in a teacher-supervised vehicle. However, on August 26, 2020, the New York State Education Department issued the "Updated Guidance on Driver and Traffic Safety Education" in Response to COVID-19 giving programs the option of allowing students to complete the 24 hours of laboratory (in-vehicle) instruction under the supervision of a parent/guardian holding a valid New York State driver's license.
Upon completion of the Driver Education Program, students will receive their MV285 certificate which is the "night license" for drivers over 17 years old.
The Syracuse City School District (SCSD) will be offering a Fall Driver Education in September 2022. Students who reside outside the SCSD District but still in Onondaga County may also participate.
